Product Details
Core Specifications
-
Material: Nitride-bonded silicon carbide (NSiC), an ultra-thin, low-mass advanced kiln furniture material.
-
Maximum Use Temperature: 2600°F (approx. 1427°C), suitable for Cone 14 and above.
-
Weight: Extremely light—approximately 1.6 lb (approx. 0.73 kg) for a comparable size, more than 50% lighter than traditional cordierite shelves.
Key Advantages
-
No Warping: Extremely low thermal creep at high temperatures; remains flat after repeated firings. No need to flip the shelf.
-
Very Low Porosity: Surface porosity <1%, so glaze drips do not penetrate easily, making cleanup simple.
-
Space & Energy Savings: The ultra-thin design allows more stacking levels inside the kiln, and the low thermal mass helps shorten firing cycles.
Price & Compatibility
-
Reference Price: Ranges from $68.00 to $190.95 USD depending on the supplier and stock status.
-
Compatible Kilns: Explicitly designed for L&L Plug-N-Fire and Skutt Firebox series small/test kilns.
Usage Precautions
-
Ramp Rate Limits: The heating/cooling rate from room temperature to 1000°F (538°C) should not exceed 325°F (163°C) per hour. Do not force-cool or prop open the kiln lid to speed cooling, as this can easily cause thermal shock and cracking.
-
Moisture Storage: The material slowly absorbs moisture. If fired directly after long exposure to a humid environment, it may suffer a "steam explosion" and shatter. Always store in a dry place.
-
Electrical Safety: Silicon carbide is electrically conductive. Ensure the shelf does not come into contact with heating elements to prevent short circuits or electric shock hazards.
